Differences Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil

Many people have some confusion over the differences between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil.  The uses for which they are intended are sometimes inferred interchangeably. Even assuming the Hemp is a general term for marijuana products is definitely incorrect. Hopefully, the following will dispel some of the confusion and clearly define the differences between the two oils and their uses.

Plant Species

Both oils come from different strains of the Cannabis Sativa plant.  However, the Hemp plant is a strain that has a low cannabinoid count. The Hemp plant is stalky and grows between 10 – 15 feet in height, whereas the Cannabis Sativa is normally cultivated to be bushy and is about 5 feet high.

Parts of Plants Used for Each Oil

Hemp Oil is extracted from the seeds of the Hemp plant.
CBD Oil is produced from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the Cannabis Sativa plant.

Cannabinoid Content

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that act on the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and immune system. 113 cannabinoids have been found so far. The two primary ones that we are concerned with are Delta9-Tetrahydrocannbinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).

Both Hemp Oil and CBD Oil are low in THC.  For Hemp Oil to be legal in the United States, the THC level must be 0.3% or lower.
CBD Oil can have 1% to 5% THC to enhance the medicinal effects.

Hemp Oil has a low level of CBD (3.5%)
CBD Oil has a high level of CBD (20%)

Hemp CBD Oil is legal in America and most of the rest of the world.
CBD Oil derived from the Cannabis plant must be purchased from Medical Marijuana Dispensaries or legal Recreational Shops because of THC content.
